What do Metallica and Lindt have in common? Both are famous for heavy metal. But while one has been known since the ‘80s as the go-to band of biker bars, the other recently became the must-sue brand of contaminated chocolate bars.
Not to be confused with Cadbury chocolate, Lindt has apparently been confecting cadmium chocolate for years. Consumer Reports conducted a study of 21 dark chocolate bar brands in early 2022 and found “dangerous” levels of lead and cadmium in a mouthful of America’s favorite dark chocolates – – yum!
To be fair, most samples exceeded California’s maximum allowable dose level (MADL) of both elements, but Lindt just can’t seem to escape. Probably because it keeps urging the courts to toss out the lawsuit, doubling down on its claim that, even though its food might be dangerous to eat, it hasn’t caused any known harm other than to chocoholics’ wallets.
This specific case against Lindt was disposed of, but unless they can prove their “finest ingredients” claim includes sourcing only top-tier ores, they may have to mine their way out of court another day.
